      NLA 2025 Spring Virtual Foundations of Lipidology Course (Videos with subtitles + Slides)

      PROGRAM OVERVIEW

      The NLA’s Foundations of Lipidology course provides an introductory review of the core curriculum in Clinical Lipidology. This course is designed for any healthcare professional seeking to learn the fundamentals of Lipidology. Experts in Lipidology will lecture on basic concepts and guide participants through interactive learning scenarios that provide the knowledge and tools necessary to work effectively in lipid practice and prepare for advanced training.

      This course is particularly useful to review core elements of Clinical Lipidology and is appropriate for clinicians from the full spectrum of clinical experience including Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacist, Exercise Physiologists, and Dietitians who are in any phase of training, or even experienced physicians who are looking to take a deeper dive into Lipidology.

      The Foundations of Lipidology is offered as a 2-day course prior to NLA meetings (Clinical Lipid Updates [CLU] and Scientific Sessions).

      TARGET AUDIENCE

      This activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, nurse practitioners and registered dietitians seeking to develop an expertise in clinical lipidology.

      LEARNING OBJECTIVES

      At the Conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

      • • Explain the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, including the role of inflammation;
      • • Describe the functions and sources of cholesterol and triglycerides including the role of lipoproteins in atherosclerosis;
      • • Review basic principles of statistics in clinical trials;
      • • Discuss key clinical trials of lipid-altering drug therapies used in cardiovascular disease prevention;
      • • Recognize the role of drug therapy in the management of dyslipidemia;
      • • Review the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of approved drugs for the management of dyslipidemia;
      • • Review types of pharmacotherapy with lipid-related impacts;
      • • Council patients on dietary recommendation for lipid management;
      • • Recognize the importance of lifestyle modification in the reduction of cardiometabolic risk;
      • • Describe treatment approaches for dyslipidemia in specific populations based on age, gender, ethnicity, and cultural variables;
      • • Discuss current guidelines for the management and treatment of patients with dyslipidemia;
      • • Identify primary and secondary causes of dyslipidemia;
      • • Recognize comorbidities associated with and causes of secondary dyslipidemias.
      • • Distinguish between acquired and inherited dyslipidemias.
      • • Compose a treatment plan for patients with complex lipid disorders;
      • • Compose a treatment plan for the management of dyslipidemia in specific populations;
      • • Compose a treatment plan for reducing risk of CVD in patients with dyslipidemia.
